In order to help students improve their writing, support and encouragement must be given.
Scrutinizing the nitty-gritty isn't helpful and will put students off from writing

When a teacher response to a paper, it should be a shared response

Many know how to correct for grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation, but responding to content is more demanding. individualized comments that are intended to give further direction to a paper
The role of the responder changes as the student develops as a writer.
"To promote fluency, accentuate the positive" let the student know there are interesting parts to their writing
To encourage control in writing, have students make a list of characteristics of skilled writers
Responding to skilled writers can require the teacher to act like a critic, but a critic with a purpose to polish and improve the existing work.
Teach students how to respond -be very specific to newly developing responders and teach them to be kind

Teachers need to be knowledgeable about how to respond to students' writing in order to help students learn how to write.
The writing process can be a powerful, confidence building situation. In the same light, going about it the wrong way can be a very bad situation for a student. Writing is vulnerable and personal .
